OV goodbye
To our dear contributors, supporters, and stakeholders:
Today is the day no publisher ever wants to dawn.
Unfortunately, advances in technology, changes to arts funding, the transformation and evolution of the publishing industry and the state of today’s economy have contributed to the situation Other Voices now faces, where continuing to publish our journal of the literary and visual arts is no longer feasible. We, both the board and the editorial staff, have spent much time discussing and debating the options and have come to the sad conclusion that we must shut down production.
It is time to put Other Voices to bed, and to pay homage to the honourable institution it has been. All good things must come to an end, and while this is a sad day, we leave behind us a wonderful legacy of giving a voice to those who may not have been heard had we not existed. Many of these voices have gone on to achieve great things and to continue to gift the world with their talents.
We invite you to join us at our final fundraiser, to cover closing costs, to reminisce and to thank everyone who contributed either their writings or their time to Other Voices over the years.
Musical acts, comedians, poets, and writers: all are invited to take advantage of the open stage! Tell all your friends! If you want to book a specific stage time for a set of music or comedy, please contact Ryan Willis via the below email address. If you cannot make it, please, spread the word! If there are any talented poster-makers out there who wish to help out, let us know! We could also use some bake sale contributors.
Our final gala will be held at The New Wunderbar Hofbrauhaus (8120 101 Street, Edmonton, Alberta) from 4pm until 11pm on Sunday, May 27th, 2012. Please tell your friends and anyone you may know who has contributed to Other Voices in one way or another over the last 24 years. We would love to include and thank everyone. Celebrations will include music, comedy, readings, speeches, and a bake sale, as well as the sale of Other Voices backs issues and swag. We also have the support of some amazing local artists who have contributed paintings, photographs, and books for the cause.

New e-mail addresses for submissions
Please be aware that Other Voices has created three new e-mail addresses for each of its categories. Writers are now required to send their pieces of writing to the appropriate e-mail address. Please find the new e-mail addresses in the Submit section of the website with the guidelines for each genre.

Other Voices Needs Your Help!
That’s right, join Other Voices on Friday, November 18, 2011 at 8 pm at the Artery. We’re holding our first-ever fundraiser and…wait for it…combining it with our issue launch! It’s going to be a party like no other. Really! The evening will be hosted by comedian Michael Lalonde, who will also tickle our funny bone along with a handful of other funny guys and gals from 9:30-10:30, and we’ve got some great musicians to entertain us, namely Mikey Maybe! We’ve even got a whole host of poets including Ryan Willis and his crew from Nothing, For Now, and some of our current contributors will be reading their pieces for us.
As if that’s not enough, for the very first time ever, some of our wonderful volunteers who work so hard to keep us alive will regale us with some of their work! How could an evening get any better you say? Well, how about if I tell you that the artist of the beautiful piece on our most recent issue has kindly donated that very piece for Other Voices to sell to one lucky person? And that’s not all, we’ve got a roomful of additional art for sale too! Now you can get started on that art collection you’ve always wanted!
Oh, and did I mention the bar and the food? And the 50/50 tickets? Silly me!
So, if you’d like to read your piece, try out your newest jokes, or have a band that wouldn’t mind playing a free gig, email us at promotions@othervoices.ca before November 17, 2011.
And if you don’t want to miss the literary party of the season, you can buy tickets for $10 advance at theartery.ca or email promotions@othervoices.ca, or just head down that night! Tickets are $15 at the door.

Wislawa Szymborska died on February 1, 2012. In honour of her life and work, this month’s writing prompt is taken from her poem, “Parting With a View” (The End and the Beginning, 1993).
I don’t reproach the spring
for starting up again.
I can’t blame it
for doing what it must
year after year.
I know that my grief
will not stop the green.
The grass blade may bend
but only in the wind.
It doesn’t pain me to see
that clumps of alders above the water
have something to rustle with again.
I take note of the fact
that the shoes of a certain lake
is still—as if you were living—
as lovely as before.
I don’t resent
the view for its vista
of a sun-dazzled bay.
I am even able to imagine
some non-us
sitting at this minute
on a fallen birch trunk.
