The Monthlies

Winner July 2008

Aubade
(in my 72nd year)

by Mary Cresswell

Oh, bod
you have served me well
the heights of rapture
the depths of hell
How we have stuck together this long
I cannot tell
but I am glad to be with you
oh, bod

Oh, bod
when I think of that time in Japan
or Spokane – remember the man
whose name was Stan … or Dan
not what you’d call a winner
–(was he Sam?)
but you and me are survivors
oh, bod.

Oh, bod
we’ve had the bit in our teeth
and dust on our skirts
but things have been worse
we go together
like we have from the first
we’re in it for always

oh, bod.
