Other Voices Fall Updates!

Did you see them? The leaves? They’re changing. And back-to-school habit has us feeling refreshed and motivated. Here’s some things that are happening here at OV:

Volunteer Funding Co-ordinator Position Open
We’re looking to add to our team. If you’re organized and self-motivated, and are looking for a way to help contribute to the writing community through grant applications for the organzation and fundraising events, then apply now. Deadline for applicants is September 17.

Fall Poetry Contest
It’s time for cozy socks and sweaters, a mug of your favourite hot beverage and a morning (or evening) just you, your notebook and your pen. Poetry contest deadline is Sept 21, 2010. Prize of $250.00 Remember you can submit online and that your entry comes with a free one-year subscription.

Finally, keep and eye out. Issue 23.1 will be on the shelves and in the mail soon.

New Subscriber Incentives!

Purchase two 2-yr subscriptions (e.g. for you and a friend) and we will include two free back issues (i.e. $70 of subscriptions gets $10 of free back issues).
Purchase two 1-yr subscriptions (e.g. for you and a friend) and we will include one free back issue (i.e. $40 of subscriptions gets $5 of free back issues).

As you may or may not know, the recent cuts to arts funding have affected Other Voices’ pocketbook. Due to this pinch, we need to start fundraising and increasing readership.

To this end, we are starting a subscriptions drive. Right now, we want to focus on getting you to subscribe instead of just buying single issues. The more subscriptions we get, the more funding we are eligible to receive from the Canada Council for the Arts. A greater subscription base will create more stability in the magazine, ensuring that we have a future.

So here is what we need from you. Subscribe! Encourage other people to subscribe! Beg, chide, guilt, encourage, entice and tempt the people around you, especially family and friends. If you can each get 5 subscribers, you will make a huge difference for Other Voices.

Be creative. Be outgoing. Take the initiative to ensure Other Voices will be around for your daughters to read!

Visit the subscriptions page to subscribe online.

Summer Writing Camps!

It’s been shaky, but I think it’s safe to say that summer is here!

With summer comes lots of free time for the kids, so Other Voices (hosted by MacEwan University) is running a set of Summer Youth Writing Camps for ages 10-18.

Live the life of a writer for a week! Learn what day-to-day life is like for an author, how they get past writer’s block, how they get new ideas, how they get them on the page and, most importantly, how they get their work published.

By the end of the week not only will you have tons of seedlings sprouting in your imagination, you’ll have some completed work that you’ll send off to publications across the country and you’ll even produce your own literary magazine!

Space is limited so register early.

Looking for something a little more intense? Where you sleep, eat and drink creativity amongst like-minded peers? Check out the Young Alberta Book Society’s WordsWorth Summer Camp held in Bragg Creek, AB.
